About Me

What does the “desert” have to do with baking? Quite a bit here at: “Desert or Dessert”. I have lived 12 years of my adult life in one desert or another and after a little “cool down” in Germany we are about to head back to the desert again. I could easily survive on “dessert” alone but the future nutritionist in me gives me no approval. To keep my hands busy and my oven primed I churn out bread and other baked goods. Becoming a better baker is high on my “to do” list, especially the art of baking bread is dear to my heart. I am a German after all and sourdough runs through my veins. Unfortunately I have a contact allergy to wheat but found that with spelt I have hardly any symptoms. Therefore spelt is the flour I use like others use wheat. I hope you join me on my journey to draw out the baker within me.

PostHeaderIcon Finally a master recipe bread again…9 HBin5 – Hearty Whole Wheat Sandwich Loaf

I have been yearning for some good bread this last 10 days. Don’t get me wrong, I have been eating bread and not bad one either but there is something about the master recipe of the HBin5 I enjoy. It’s quick and easy and mighty tasty. How can you go wrong with that.

Time is of an essence as we close up shop here in Germany so this was just perfect.
You can find the recipe for the master recipe here in this Mother Earth News article.
All really great bread starts with fresh ingredients. What could be fresher than grinding your own flour. That is how I usually start any baked goods with whole wheat.

2010-05-131 Quick and easy! One little problem arose and that is the fact that I need a new lame (bread scoring tool). Mine was not sharp enough and tore my bread. Did not matter in the end because it’s tasty and that’s what counts!

This post will be linked to Michelle’s blog Big Black Dogs where you can read up on the results of my fellow bakers who attempt to bake through the Healthy Bread in 5 Minutes book.

I agree there is nothing like a good loaf whole wheat bread especially when it's made with freshly ground whole wheat. Delicious!

Good luck with your move!
